SEC Reprimands Kiffin

// October 26th, 2009 // Comments

20091026kiffinThe SEC has reprimanded Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin for criticizing officials who worked the Volunteers’ game against Alabama, but can anybody really blame him? How can the SEC shake their finger at Kiffin for questioning the refs, when just a week prior the SEC itself suspended a reffing crew after it called penalties that the league said were not supported by video evidence in the LSU-Georgia game on Oct. 3 and the Arkansas-Florida game on Oct. 17? Obviously shit happens, and oftentimes shit happens in favor of the higher-ranked team on the field. Reffing can be a problem, but the solution isn’t putting tape over peoples’ mouths.

The latest BCS rankings have been published. USC, Oregon and Arizona climb up to #5, #10 and #20, respectively. Also of note, Cal has clawed its way back to being ranked, making their second ranked debut at #24. Make the jump to see the entire Top 25. (more…)

It’s Official: Nebraska Is NOT “Back”

Poor Nebraska fans. They thought their Huskers were back on the upswing, but losing to Iowa State today 9-7 definitively destroys that line of thought.

Randall Carroll Calls Norm Chow His Nigga

// October 24th, 2009 // Comments

UCLA WR Randall Carroll was supposed to be a savior of Bruin football. Apparently, however, he seems to be just another true freshman who hasn’t done anything yet talking trash about the most accomplished offensive coordinator in college football history. Check out Carroll’s Twitter page.

Update: Since this posting, Carroll has locked his Twitter page. Never fear though, his previous Tweet will be forever archived here at TCQB in image form!

Update #2: Since having locked his Twitter page, the Twitter account has been deleted and no longer exists. Proof is still here, however. Boom!

Update #3: The LA Times has picked up the story.

A Conference Can Have Parity And Still Suck

// October 24th, 2009 // Comments

big10sucksCory McCartney at SI.com is trying to turn turds into diamonds. His argument is that the Big-10 isn’t week, it just has parity.

Sorry Cory. Lets call a piece of shit a piece of shit. The Big-10 is way down this year. Parity with a bunch of unspectacular, entirely average teams isn’t something to be praised, and anybody who really watches college football is not going to fall for your spin. The ACC had the most parity last year and look where they are now.

Can anybody really make an argument right now as to why the Big-10 should be ranked within the top 4 BCS conferences this season? I sure can’t.

Trying To Understand The SEC’s Perennial Respect

// October 23rd, 2009 // Comments

caltennHere we go again. The annual measuring of college football conferences against each other. And once again, the SEC comes out on top. My big question though, is “why?” Don’t get me wrong, the SEC is a great conference that I always enjoying watching play football, but are SEC teams really that much more talented, that much faster, that much bigger, year in and year out that they deserve the largely self-appointed title of “best college football conference” every year?

My opinion in short: No!

Toby Gerhart Tries Out For A Cappella?

// October 23rd, 2009 // Comments

Not really, but Stanford’s promotional video for Toby’s big performance after this week’s game versus Arizona State is mildly amusing. Mildly. Is it just me, or does Gerhart not look very big at all, especially considering how all the other guys around him look like World of Warcraft superstars? Keep your eyes open for Coach Harbaugh’s big cameo!

Washington’s Locker Tops List of Draft Prospects

// October 23rd, 2009 // Comments

Can’t really say I’m all that surprised Jack Locker topped the NFP’s Super 30. In my opinion, he’s pretty much the only QB in college football right now that is just damn good in his own right, and not the result of their college football system (Tebow, McCoy) or has a big warning sign hanging over his head (Bradford). Funny though, there doesn’t seem to be a single cornerback anywhere on this list, but there are three safeties. Weird.

Which Games I’m Watching This Week

television

It’s Friday, and I’m sitting here in my tiny cubicle hoping my boss doesn’t see me writing about college football instead of crunching a wall of numbers into Excel. He just doesn’t understand how serious of a thing college football is for people like you and me. Fucking Ivy-Leaguers.

Unfortunately for myself, my beloved California Golden Bears are playing PAC-10 doormat Washington State this weekend and nobody wanted to take a chance broadcasting that inevitable massacre for fear of not making it past the censors. So below are the games that interest me the most, taking into account BCS implications, potential playmakers, and just overall schadenfreude in cheering for teams I hate to lose.

#11 Oregon @ Washington – I’m wondering if the Oregon Ducks can keep things rolling for themselves and beat the team that beat USC up in their house. True, Washington has dropped a couple since kicking the mighty Trojans in the nuts, but I think the Huskies have enough talent and the much improved coaching needed to be able to pull off this upset, and who doesn’t like seeing an upset? Set Terrell Free!

// October 22nd, 2009 // Comments

pryor

Terrelle Pryor’s high school coach Ray Reitz wants to tell Jim Tressel how to do his job. Instead of entertaining the idea that perhaps, maybe, Pryor actually isn’t that great of a quarterback, he basically blames the entire Ohio State offensive scheme, which more or less has been working pretty good for the past couple decades (except in games that matter!).

“They need Terrelle to run more,” former Jeannette (Pa.) High School coach Ray Reitz said. “They’ve put the reins on him and they need to let him go free. When I watch Terrelle play right now, I see a robot.”
